FUCK U SKRILLEX YOU THINK UR ANDY WARHOL BUT UR NOT!! <3 is the fourth album from California electronic musician Sonny Moore, better known as Skrillex. His music over the years has evolved from dubstep to a more trap/mainstream EDM sound, but this latest release is him returning to his dubstep roots of his early EPs. In fact, the recording of this album goes back 15 years ago to 2010. His reception by audiences is polarizing to say the least, as people either love his music or hate it and there’s no in between. Here are my thoughts.
I will preface this by saying despite the album’s long track list it’s actually a relatively short album as none of the tracks exceed 3 minutes in length. As soon as we hit the first track, “SPITFIRE,” featuring HAWAII SLIM, I knew that this album was going to be a throwback to his old stuff. I really like the mixture of sounds on this thing as there’s dubstep, trap, hyper pop, and UK garage just to name a few genres. “TEARS LOST DROP,” has some of the best drum production on the entire project, while “THINGS I PROMISED,” actually has Skrillex singing lead vocals at one point. “ANDY,” is built around a great sample of “Top Off,” by DJ Khaled, and Skrillex finds a way to make it sound like a completely different track entirely, I only recognized Future’s distinct vocal delivery, as he’s featured on the track. The transitions on this album are seamless, as they all connect to each other quite well. Some of the tracks I don’t particularly enjoy on this thing aren’t necessarily for their sound in every instance, as with “LOOK AT YOU,” I don’t like it because I felt more could’ve been done if it had been a longer track. “MOMENTUM,” has this really floaty trap sound that I greatly enjoy, even if it’s not my absolute favorite track, there’s really a lot to like about it. I love that abrasive razor-like synth on “MIRCHI TEST.” “SEE YOU AGAIN VIP,” definitely fits the hyperpop aspect of the record very well, while “KORABU,” features angelic vocals and pianos that evoke this feeling of nostalgia for me. “ZEET NOISE,” is probably one of my least favorite tracks, as production-wise there just really isn’t much going on, plus the bass drop feels very underwhelming. Some other tracks I greatly enjoyed were “SAN DIEGO VIP,” “SAY GOODBYE,” and “VOLTAGE.”
My biggest issue with this album is that the strongest ideas are often too short and not always developed, while the less innovative parts just really go on for too long. It’s by no means a bad album though, this project actually made me remember the good parts of middle school, which for most people are hard to come by. This album serves as a solid final album with his long time label, Atlantic, and the narrator announcements are humorous and self-aware, which I didn’t really expect to hear from a Skrillex album. It’s a good electronic album, but I feel like a lot of these concepts could’ve been explored in more depth, and that while the tracks connect together well, it essentially is a collection of previously unreleased songs and snippets.
